Increasing salinity

Hey reef friends,

My current salinity is 32.8 or 1.0247. My goal is to bring it up to 1.026.

Can I make salt water with slightly higher (e.g. 1.028) salinity for my next water change? If so, can I do a 20% water change or keep it at 10%?

Yes or you can stop top it off with less saltwater! Just go slow especially in a nano.

Best way to raise salinity slowly is to top off with saltwater instead of RODI until you reach the desired value.

I dont know if its common practice but thats exactly what I do. I test so much on my nano (almost daily for just alk) that after awhile my salinity starts dropping (not all the time). When I make my fresh saltwater up, I make it 1.027 though. Im changing 5 gallons on a 30 gallon system once a week and it doesnt cause any problems for me.

I top off with saltwater manually and allow evaporation to naturally raise the salinity over a week or so

I’d say it’s better because if you make a water change at 1.028, then your other parameters and elements will also be higher too. Plus, it’s so easy to just put saltwater in the ATO reservoir.
