It really bothers me how the Indonesian government banned the sustainable industry of coral export. People are so concerned about their reefs when there is unregulated toxic waste and trash being dumped into rivers and going straight into the ocean. They should do a study on how much coral is killed due to this. I know its politics, court of public opinion, and many other factors which are not going to change but jeez.
The most polluted river in the world

Pretty sure the ban on indo has been lifted for weeks now ;Bored I do agree there are much bigger issues at hand than people cultivating corals

Yeah, banned like past tense. I guess had banned would be better. I guess it's the little things.

Wild coals are open for a short bit and they are just allowing some maricultured corals for now.

A lot of wild indos are being brought in.And the market is price gouging the people.Once cheap indos going for 150 to 300 are now in the thousands.

I went to Bali last year and was diving and noticed chemicals in the water. asked our guide about it and they said a gas tanker ships unload less then a mile away. those huge ships was killing this beautiful area because it had the best shore access! wouldn't be better to spend a little bit more to place the refinery away from a reef!

Economic growth still gets the priority in Indonesia unfortunately. The governance does not see environment as a relevant consideration in policy decisions. I cant see this changing soon either. Dynamite and Cyanide are still used regularly to collect ornamentals as well.

That does not compute with corporate capitalism. It will cut into profits.

They were no doubt pressured into this now reversed poor decision by the likes of GreenPeace activists - “If officials perform stronger monitoring, control, surveillance and enforcement coordination among authorities, the export ban would reduce direct pressures to coral reefs ecosystems, both those in marine protected areas or out of the areas,” said Ariefsyah Nasution, an oceans campaigner at Greenpeace.

But it was having the opposite effect - Ornamental Fish International (OFI) president Shane Willis believes the ban has the potential to undermine efforts to encourage the sustainable management of coral reef use.

“A lot of people who are now employed coral farmers are actually fishermen who used to use cyanide and other destructive practices. They’re now helping the environment, but they’re prevented from doing that and have no alternatives,” Willis said.

“So will they go back to some of these destructive fishing practices? It’s possible. People are going to do what they have to do to survive.”

Yes. The doco on the polluted river demonstrates why Indonesia needs to continue economic development & industrialisation. Not only to bring their population out of third world poverty by providing real jobs, but to enable the development of basic processes such as efficient waste treatment systems - to control pollution, for example, by providing other options besides dumping waste into a river.
The developed world has the cleanest environments while the third world has the worst.
