I bought the muscle racks 5 shelf 36x18 shelf from home depot. My question is…will one coat of polycrylic be sufficient enough to seal the mdf shelves? I do not care about furniture grade finish, just protection. Before anyone suggests replacing the mdf, I’m not paying the ridiculous amount they want for plywood. It’s only going to be holding a single 40 gallon breeder as a frag tank and various supplies. I won’t be assembling it in the 5 vertical shelf format, but in the horizontal arrangement.

If you don’t care what it looks like would use one coat of regard. You’d need three or more coats of poly and keep your fingers crossed

You could cut a piece of 1/8” thick ABS to go over the top of the mdf.

will a 40 breeder actually fit? At least the weight will be spread pretty evenly and along the parameter

According to youtube videos it fits! I ended up doing 2 coats of polycrylic and also wrapped it in Plast-o-mat shelf liner for added security and secured it to the bottom with staples.
