I recently bought a Canon T4i & got the following lenses
Canon 50mm f/1.4 Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AF Lens, USA #2515A003 2515A003
Canon 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 STM Lens Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens 6097B002
Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens - USA Warranty 6310B002

I have a deal on trying some out & getting rid of the other. Can someone please suggest me the recommended use of these lens for my following uses:
1. Pictures of my Family, Indoor & Outdoor (I am under the understanding 18-135 is appropriate for this)
2. Macro photography of corals.

I have read I need a 1:1 Macro lens (Not sure what 1:1 mean here) , does 50mm f/1.4 work better or 40mm f/2.8?
I also got Extension tubes.

Or

Can you suggest me a few options for the right Macro Lens for taking close up shots of Corals. What mm & f works the best?

To be honest, I'd get rid of the 40mm. It's very close to the 50mm and I think you'll find the 50mm more useful.

The 18-135 will be a good "walk around" lens, useful in lots of different scenarios.

The 50mm will be a great portraiture lens!

For Macro, you'll want a longer lens, and I'd highly suggest the Canon 100mm Macro. get the old school Non L series. The main difference is that the newer L series 100mm Macro includes IS (Image Stabilizer), which really isn't very useful for Macro photography.

The 100mm is also an AMAZING portraiture lens.

I agree^.

I currently make next to nothing off of my photography and I only have a Canon 50mm f/1.4, a Canon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6, and a Tamron 180mm Macro lens. I would suggest getting a third party macro lens, like Tamron, if you do not want to pay the substantial price of a Canon lens. If price is not an issue, go Canon! Like returnofsid said, the 18-135mm is a great lens for walking around with. I take a lot of my pictures with it. Here are four of my favorites taken with that lens:

As for the Tamron 180mm Macro lens, it is about half the price of the Canon equivalent and takes excellent photos as well. I took these pictures with the Tamron 180mm Macro lens:
