Gee... an island culture, harvesting sustenance from the seas. Huh.
They'd probably say the same thing to us as I say to the city dwellers berating me for harvesting deer, turkey, and rabbits from my woods. No, I can't say that kind of thing here... it's a family website.
Hawaii has recently taken away a valuable resource, being able to export fishes for the aquarium trade. The people who count on the sea to provide will continue to harvest from the sea... if they can't sell them (legally) to the aquarium trade, they'll sell them to the food markets.
How are there not regulations on species banned from harvest/netting/slaughter?!?!
You can't always pick what bites your hook. From a fisherman's perspective, it's hardly be worthwhile to target small, thin bodied species like this, when the water is full of fishes much more appropriate for human consumption. I'm sure this was accidental bycatch.
Seems you're asking for MORE regulation... when it's regulation that caused the situation you're frustrated by. A regulation banned export of live fishes. More regulation, banning species from subsistence fishing, won't solve the problem.
Any time I hear the phrase 'there ought to be a law', I just cringe. No, thanks, we've got plenty.
I agree with this. Honestly when others start pointing fingers, then that's where the trouble starts.Ok, get ready for a rant.

Hmmm, as someone who lived on the Big Island for 5 years,
I think the aquarium ban is stupid.
Your whining about local people fishing is even more stupid.
Let me repeat that.
Your whining about local people fishing is even more stupid.
Reef fish are not my thing as a food source.
Ciguatera never did much for me.
Lol, but the same thing can be said about mercury in swordfish. (Which I love)
Try thinking of it as humane killing for sustenance verse long term (or short term!) torture of an animal.
How many people do you know that can really do justice to that animals living needs?
How many threads have you watched concerning "How many fish can I stuff in this tank?". (I have been an offender. Keeping too many smaller sized fish in a 75 gallon.)
"Whaddya mean the PBT and Sohal won't play nice together in my 120!?"
"Why not?"
On another thread, someone was complaining about the requirements you need to keep a venomous reptile verse paly's (and paly toxin) complete lack of requirements.
There are a number of hoops that you need to jump through to and adopt a rescue dog.
If you needed to jump through the same number of hoops to purchase a fish that requires a 180 gallon tank just to have a decent life in captivity, maybe we would have more of a leg to stand on when it comes to Snorkel Bob's emotional pleas to random, clueless, well meaning citizens who help our industry get banned.
Rant off.
