Ok guys so I'm the definition of a reefer on a budget and I never thought I would get my hands on an mp40 but I recently had an old one given to me by someone whose been out of the hobby for a while. I would love to use this thing but unfortunately it's in bad shape. I can't get the wet and dry sides apart (is there a trick to it?), the impeller doesn't really want to turn by hand, the plug that connects the power supply to the controller doesn't feel like it plugs in all the way, and it didn't come with the cord that plugs the power supply into the wall. I did try a cord from my computer and didn't get any response from it.. Any constructive advice guys? Thanks

It looks like the wires are exposed on the dry side, are any of them cut open?

As for separating them, just pull. It's a strong magnet

Ya I noticed the wires, I'll have to look closer but I don't think they are actually cut open. I've tried pulling and twisting but am worried I'll break it. Also I'm not positive exactly where the 2 sides come apart.

Split at the red line, try soaking the wet side in vinegar to free it up

real heavy duty magnet so just pull aprt but from the picture, it looks like there was algae that continued to the dry side which seems a bit strange (unless the picture is fooling my eyes which has occurred befor..lol)

That's weird, I didn't notice that but I do see it. That could be the problem

The line you are looking at (which the coralline continues past) is where the grill/shroud screws into the wet side base.

Thanks for the help guys, I did get it apart and while apart the propeller seems to spin just fine. I still haven't gotten it to power on though (even the power supply doesn't light up). Do the power supplies typically go bad?

They can. Just match the voltage and buy one off of amazon for like $20
