I am new to the hobby and just bought this controller thinking I could plug both my primary and backup heaters into it. The equipment has heat and cool outlets on it though. My house stays cold all year so cooling it isn’t a concern I have. Should I have bought the 306 instead to make sure that if one of my heaters malfunctions my fish don’t boil or do I need 2 controllers? I thought the WiFi would be helpful but guess I didn’t think it through.

Kinda late now but the 306A also has wifi and plugs for 2 heaters. You could probably get away with running a small extension cord splitter from it to power both heaters from one outlet.

Wait I'm not sure I understood what you are trying to do. If you want the two heaters to kick on and off at different temperatures you would need 2 temp controllers.

If you can exchange to the other Inkbird that would be good but no issue as the controller is controlled by the temp probe, in your example, if one heater was to get stuck in the on position the controller would not turn that heater off and only run the other heater, it would heat the tank to the set temp, then turn both heaters off, you are not missing out on that with the Inkbird you have, you just need to buy a double socket for the two heaters to go into and stick that in the heating side of the Inkbird, then if one heater fails you still have a back up.
