When I plug in my thermometer to the inkbird controller the reading on my thermometer disappears. My thermometer has a temp display that I can easily look at that I like.
Any way around that? Is that what's supposed to happen when I connect it to the inkbird thing?

Do you mean the temp displays on the heater? I'm guessing that the inkbird is cutting the power to the heater since it is at the set temp and therefore the heater is no longer is able to display. I don't think there is a workaround to this and you'll need to use the inkbird display to see the temp.

Does the temp display when the heaters need to turn on?

Heater doesn’t have power running to it when you are checking the temp. Look at the Inkbird for your temp.

I guess I'm confused then. Does the inkbird only turn on or off the heater when needed?
Yes, the inkbird has a thermostat you put in the water. Then when your set temp is met, the inkbird cuts the power to the heaters. When your temp drops and the heater is needed again, power is restored to the heaters.

Exactly. When the controller turns off the heater, power is disrupted to it, therefore no temp indication on the heater till it's turned back on by the controller.
