So after I cleaned my sump the last time, I decided I would use some sand that I had leftover and make an unused chamber in my sump a deep sand bed. I have always struggled with nutrient export, no matter how little I fed, so I thought I would see if I liked this method in conjunction with what else I have. I am not looking to start the argument of the pros and cons of them, just looking for some input on what to look for when they're healthy or causing problems.
The sand bed is approximately 18" long 6" wide and approx 6-8" deep. There are two sizes of sand with the finer sand towards the bottom to middle. It has been in use for probably 3 or 4 months now. I see a lot of worms cruisng through the sand, a ton of little snails. And they have been going to town on the detritus and algea on the glass in the sump which I like. There is a pretty good pod population as well. I have taken a few pictures of what I have, so any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Should there be little pockets of gas in the bottom level of the sand bed?
