Yesterday I posted a thread in the LPS section about my Elegance removing itself from its base. At that time, I did not know what I know now. My Elegance is/was my favorite and healthiest coral. Always open and growing until yesterday. I assumed it was a water parameter issue.
Back to yesterday.....Returning home from work, I quickly noticed my elegance was missing. I found it in the back of the tank floating on the bottom....removed from its base. At first, I thought it was due to some minor outbreak of dino or my water parameters which were good except for my CA which was at 390 ppm. (I posted 300 ppm in the LPS section, but that was a typo). Even though it was detached, it still looked healthy (see pic).
Last night I pulled the coral out and after closer inspection I noticed about 5-6 Euphyllia (frogspawn) polyps inside the dying coral. The Euphyllia lost a head about 3-4 days ago and the polyps were floating around. I understand the Euphyllia has a toxic sting to other corals and the only conclusion I can draw is that the polyps still had some sting in them, hence killing the Elegance.
Sound like coral warfare or could it be something else? Anybody else ever see this?
Attached are pics of the coral and the base shortly after it detached. No pics of the polyps inside the coral but you can imagine that.
