Instagram reefers are ruining this hobby ?

Why do I feel like Instagram reefers are ruining this hobby by making everything better than what it seems to be. Prime example of how they are

A little suspicious that they actually exists, and they clearly use heavy blues. I don't think they're ruining the hobby though, we just need to be more vigilant and reward the sellers that accurately represent their corals.

Places like these make their money from using the tools which are at their fingertips. From the name game to photoshop, they target an audience and exploit it. I can't be mad that they know what they're doing in order to bring in the cash. I can only choose to not support the companies and people who I feel do nothing to advance the scientific and conservation side of everything. As for Instagram reefers, there's a place for them. Just as there is a place for "forum reefers". Anyone can freely choose their outlet to display their progress and excitement for the hobby.

I feel like it really doesn’t take long in this hobby to figure out that camera filters are capable of pulling crazy colors the human eye can’t see. Some people just have no awareness and I struggle finding sympathy for them.

if I order a coral online and know it’s amplified by heavy blues from even the most reliable vendors my expectations are that it will NEVER look like that in standard daylight. Some corals just photo so well and are different in person but still manage to look good. (Cherry bomb is a perfect example).

I'd like to add. Many online vendor pics regardless of lighting are taken from above and corals usually look better from that angle.

How many people actually normally view their tank from top down? I don't, my tank is viewed from eye level to below from sitting on the couch. The vibrant colors aren't seen by me.

So true! This changed my approach a while back on how high I stack my rocks. The more of a top down look I can get the better. Colonies high up end up just showing off the dead shadow spots when the beauty is sitting under the lights near the top.

There's one born every minute, and they will likely learn the hard way. Hucksters prey off of these people, but it has been this way forever. The only thing that changes is the con.

That image is terrible and I would never buy that coral without seeing it in person or getting some none grainy none saturated pics. I don’t think that’s instagrams fault as I see it on this forum and off websites and so on.

Bi color tips already existed... it was called cotton candy torch or such... a green one and you didn’t need to photoshop to see it but it was just a subtle light blue vs light pink and probably just how the light reflected off the tips.

I see no difference in an Instagram reefer, versus a Facebook Reefer, or even a R2R reefer. Some will play with lighting, Lens filtering, or process the picture through some software and tweak it.

I feel like there’s a post like this weekly. “‘X’ type reefer/person is ruining the hobby” and yet hobby still thrives.

This is the same as the reptile community really, buy a snake online the animal looks great get it and it’s really really different!

It bothers me to some extent, but not enough to get my chonies all wadded up. I don't spend a lot of time looking at other tanks. I prefer to just look at my own.
