Installing new return pump

I've seen on here where people say they put foam under their return pump to make it more quiet. They don't mean just regular Styrofoam do they? I'm putting a new pump in and I need to make up about 1 1/2 inches of space so the pump isn't hanging from the tubing. I've got some Styrofoam but I want to make sure it's safe to put it in there.
