What's missing is reg IO?

Hey everyone. Thanks so much for all of your input. If you wouldn’t mind, start another post about IO. I think we are getting a bit off track here.

As to the question of my tank parameters, I am at 0ppm phosphate and my nitrate is 0 as well. Alkalinity is 8.4 and pH is roughly 7.9 to 8.

As I think about it, this summer is really hot here in Texas (now about 103 to 105 every day) and from what I remember, dissolved solids in tap water rise in the summers. If anything, we do know that dissolved solids can increase with higher water temps. I may be completely wrong but I wouldn’t be surprised if silicate concentration rises in the Dallas tap water in summer too. Once it started getting hot here, I saw a rise in the mystery brown substance in my reef aquarium.

Any Dallas, TX reefers out there that can respond with their experiences?

Is your belief that these values are incapable of growing corals? I'd also suggest finding values that were true vs "corrected."

My last ICP results; salinity is almost 36ppt (major elements suggest it is actually about 35.78 but close enough) so some values are slightly elevated.

Values seem pretty close. Not sure what your point is here. I think it's best to just choose what salt is closest to the parameters that you keep. Other than that some may mix up faster or cleaner. Then you have some with the trace elements and probiotics etc. Each of them have been used by people that have had great success. Your choice in salt seems to not be a huge factor imo. Then there is also the consistency batch to batch. IO may not be the best in this regard but personally I have not encountered any issues with consistency. But I'm generally not doing massive water changes so I wouldn't notice if something was a bit off anyways.

Also, wondering how many people with "diatoms" have actually checked with a microscope. Could be that many of these "diatoms" cases are actually cyano or dinos.

Now you're just putting words in my mouth. Plz...by all means continue to use reg IO. If you're happy with reg IO, I'm happy 4u

There is quite a bit of data that has been posted in the thread regardless of opinions. Of the data points posted, none of it leads to a cause of diatoms.
 
I think you posted but can’t find it now that you phosphates and nitrates were at zero. This can cause a Dino out break. This happen to me. I was running gfo and cheato in my sump. I stopped the gfo and added a cleanup crew along with a bottle of pods. Once I stoped the gfo my levels were still undetectable but I started getting green hair algae in the sump. I cut my gfo in half and things are better. BTW is this your first algae outbreak in the DT? If so it’s normal and part of the 2nd cycle after the the first.
 
i have used plain ol io for more years than I care to admit. never had an issue with it. my tank is super clean with no brown anywhere. it isn't the salt mix

Good call. I do have pretty low numbers. I’m trying to feed more, etc to bring the numbers up a bit. Might need to dose.

No it’s not the first time for an outbreak. First time was during the cycle. Tank is about 9 mos old now.

what if a thread existed where we cured diatoms across tanks, regardless of the type of salt or sand you used? that would take down the IO theory pretty much. sand rinse thread/no diatoms/12 pages. There is no salt mix or sand brand linked with recurring invasions, what is linked with tank invasions is hands off reefing where the keeper initializes, farms, and grows the hated intruder on purpose the entire way by refusing to escort it on out. or burn it, with correctly sized uv for example if refusal to clean a dirty sandbed is in place.

Diatoms/rinse the filthy sandbed. No sandbed that passes a drop test has diatom issues, says bigthread

regardless of brand of water or sand, some choose to be uninvaded, and they are. and we collect those links plenty

Im going back to scan here to see how many presented diatom problems using purple live rock and a bare bottom.
 
yep, its a bunch of sandbed issues, I just scanned.

not one sandbed posting here can pass a drop test, most here are lucky dino's arent the invader du joure

if anyone wants off this train, pls mssg, lets go onto page 13

new challenge: scan the whole web for threads that have bare bottom, true purple live rock, and diatoms all over the bottom glass. find one.
 
I've been bare bottom for years.
Last year I was on the Red Sea 'Blue Bucket"

I had diatoms two times, but I forgot to check the TDS meter and both times the DI resin was spent.

Re-charged and the diatoms burnt off in a matter of a few weeks.

What do have in your sump any cheato? Do you run gfo? If so stop for a while

ok, w verified topoff water next caveat, wal mart distilled heh :)

you can tell Im isolating away from brand of water being causative but yep I gotcha
