Instant Ocean No More Buckets?

I do too. I went to Home Depot and got a lid that screws on instead of snapping on. It makes a much better seal and is easier to get in to.

This means I need to start hoarding IO and RC buckets. In 20 years, they may be collectibles!!!

Rainbow Holy Orange Sunfire Bucket

Remember when the bucket made 200 gallons and came with a free mini jet 404 pump?
I have a 200w Visitherm I got out of a bucket in 1997. I still use it as a utility heater. I might have a couple of Coralife T-shirts lying around somewhere still.

Buckets are nice because they withstand the abuse in the transportation layer. In my experience when ordering boxes recently they do not and arrive at my door step banged up. Could be a local hub thing but then again the hub to door people are probably tired of slinging around heavy awkward boxes so things happen...

I guess it is one advantage of going to an LFS to buy dry goods. You can check the packaging before purchase. My last Tropic Marin salt box was a wreck :(

I don't understand why the move away from buckets.. buckets are usually HDPE, recycle code 2. Most bags I see are code 5 or code 7. 2 is commonly recycled as 5 uncommonly and 7 "other" is not at all.. and this plastic bag of American Medley potatoes in front of me has no number and a crossed out recycle symbol on it..

What recycle # is on IO bags?

Once again the wise observers notice that the reason for the change is to placate the public perception that has been manipulated to serve rather than survive.

I remember when the paper bag was removed from the market and replaced with the “environmentally friendly” plastic bag. There are a lot of paper bags in every cardboard box, and square boxes are easier for machines to handle and to cube up during transport.

Hail Amazon, Chewy & all the other providers of reefing equipment.

Problem with most recycling companies is that they only accept cans, plastic bottles, glass jars and bottles, paper, and cardboard. That's it. If you were to throw other forms of plastic in the bin (even if it's technically recyclable), it just gets tossed at the sorting facility. Most recycling programs are pretty wasteful.

Don’t remember which brand of salt, got a measuring cup. If you filled the cup, to the top, and leveled it with a plastic knife, it would make up 2 gallons of Saltwater at exactly 34.2 ppt. Almost cried when it snapped in half.

Interesting enough some of the recycling businesses in our area are no longer accepting cans or bottles and sticking only to scrap metal(s).

I used to get the Square buckets at the Dump, don’t know what they do with them anymore. I have buckets of Pecan, Maple, Oak, wood chunks for smoking meats. Need one for Apple Wood. Also have square buckets in the shed with Lawn Tractor Spare Parts, and one with small engine parts.

Ah, another who repurposes buckets. I find more rectangular litter buckets nowadays than the squares. Used to get squares from restaurants, just had to ask. Don't miss the smell of the sauerkraut or feta bucket sitting in Florida sun though.

Ye ol' tool bucket, with plastic bottle tool dividers.

The 200 gal boxes are cheaper than the 160 gal buckets...However I have been contemplating switching to reef crystals..

I am sure it might have more to due with volume of the package in shipping.

If it really came down to recycling, all of the consumer plastics in the world to not make up for factory waste. If we recy led all of our plastic it wouldn't make that much of a dent. They talk about plastic island and bring up the water bottles, but to my understanding almost all of it is from minute plastics from manufacturing processes.

Consumer handling of waste will never make an impact, these buckets wouldn't be much different. Recycling is cool and good to do, but buckets water bottles, yogurt cups, and packaging is not the bulk of it.

There has been a lot of work put into making people think its straws and water bottles, and not a result of making production cheaper.

At least thats my guess, easier to move more product in cubes than cylinders on a pallet.
