Instant Ocean Salt at Georgia Aquarium

Hello everyone this weekend I went to the Georgia Aquarium and did behind the seas tour, while on this tour they had huge 2,000 pound bags of the regular Instant Ocean Salt they use for all of the exhibits including the reef wall. I see everyone complaining about Instant Ocean so just thought I’d share that.

Whose complaining? It is the number one salt!!! I've been using it for years because my interest in doing water changes with "ocean" water. And IO is the closest thing that has the history of a quality salt.

I don’t think lowest bidder comes into play honestly, especially when keeping 4 whale sharks and millions of dollars of revenue depend on the tanks running flawlessly. When buying that much salt I’m sure any large manufacturer would sell to them close to cost. Idk just my opinion.

Logistics certainly a big part of it. The only other company that probably has the ability to get that much salt there competitively is Fritz

Very true, I was thinking RS as I’m sure the mark up on that is somewhere between 40/60% but it would be useless in the main fish only tank. There’s not too many options for them I guess and if it came down to fritz or IO they would buy based on lowest cost. So you’re probably right!!

The main complain is inconsistent parameters. But this is also by reefers whose buckets are sitting around for long periods of time. The Georgia aquarium probably uses one of those bags in a week. So the elements dont really get a chance to settle out

It actually motivated me to give Instant Ocean another chance I was mostly using Red Sea Coral Pro

When I went there their propagation facility was powered by Apex controllers, kessil, radion, and T5 lights. In reality they are using the exact same stuff we are.

I live about an hour away and we usually visit once every couple of years. Since I started in the hobby I have asked for my birthday to be behind the scenes at the Georgia aquarium. They also have a thing where you can spend the night there.

I think the National Aquarium in Baltimore uses IO salt too. Seems to work!

Let me start by saying I’ve never been to the Georgia Aquarium.
Keep it in perspective, just how many live REEF systems are they running? And what size? How many additives are they using? Do they have their own special mix?

A label on the side of the mix means zero to me. I want to know whats in that stuff.
