After letting sit for two days in a 5 gallon bucket Insee this at bottom , is this normal? I’m assuming it’s some kind of clay or calcium?

yea IO and IO reef crystals leave a brown film. When I was using RC the circulation pump making the water would always get brown crust all over it. Not going to cause any issues its just ugly

Witch instant ocean? I use reef Crystals, after one day of mixing I dont see any precipitate, the second day I'll have that same exact clay colored stuff coating my powethead, walls, and heater. I believe it is indeed clay, rather have it in my container then in my tank, so IO I mix for 2 days before using.

I have not experienced this yet and I just did 5 gallons this weekend mixed it Friday morning and and did the change Sunday afternoon

That's not a brown film....that's either precipitate or undissolved salt. When you mix you need the most agitation you can provide. I use two powerheads in my mixing container. You also need to add the salt to the water (not the water to the salt). And sprinkle the salt into the agitated water like you're salting popcorn. And ideally, to unheated water.

+1

Also dont leave the pumps on perpetually, after its clear turn them off. On any pump the leading edge of the propeller is going to have a very high temperature from friction, this can slowly cause precipitation over time.

Yeah I mix it up in a 32 gallon trash can then pour it into 5 gallon buckets. This must have been at the end of the trashcan. I will mix it again before I add. So another question how long is water sitting in a bucket good for premixed ?

I use a pretty big power head almost impossible to think it wasn’t mixed good enough. I let it run for hours. Now on the sprinkling salt. I’m guilty it’s more of a dump it in. Heat as well while mixing. Maybe I should wait. ?

Yeah guilty here too.
