Instant Ocean Salt - Triton Test Results

That’s higher than I typically see reported. Here’s some testing from last year, with Triton showing 390 ppm calcium in it. A different test showed 408 ppm.

This post contains the information I am looking for. Thank you sir.
  • Strontium Triton 8.2, MarineLab 7.9 (nsw 8.1)
  • Boron Triton 4.9, MarineLab 3.9 (nsw 4.4)
  • Iodine Triton 168, MarineLab 111 (nsw 64 but depletes quickly)
  • Manganese Triton 28, MarineLab 24 (nsw 0.4 but depletes quickly)
  • Molybdenum Triton 2.4, MarineLab 1.4 (nsw 10)

I'll be opening a new bag this weekend so I'll check that one as well. I usually test the morning after i mix it (leave a powerhead in it for circulation and some heat all night).

IO is cheaper and works out just fine. I used RC for a little over a year before switching to IO on this tank. I haven't noticed any difference but I was using muriatic acid to lower the alkalinity of the RC where I don't bother on the IO.

Do you have to supplement more often? Is there negative side effects of high alkalinity?

My water changes are roughly 13% weekly; at that rate, the levels dont change much and it has been mixing in a range that I typically keep the tank (i.e. 420-450 calcium and 1350-1400 magnesium). Dosing didnt change with the change in mix.

There is some credible research showing that higher alkalinity levels can produce accelerated growth; most of it is well beyond my expertise but this article by @Dana Riddle has some good information. My tank is typically in the 7-8 dKH range.

Mixed up some water yesterday. Water has been circulating in a five gallon bucket for 18 hours with a small powerhead. Salinity is as close to 35ppt as I can make it using a freshly calibrated refractometer. Water temp is a frosty 65°!

Alkalinity - 10.8 dKh
Calcium - 435
Magnesium - 1365

anyone have any idea what the potassium level is on Instant Ocean Salt?

Always right around 400ppm for me. My last three ICP show 400, 394, and 423 (Triton, Triton, ATI).

Anyone know the iron levels in instant ocean?

Micronutrients like iron that are present in nsw in such small amounts are going to vary greatly batch to batch and even top to bottom of a bucket in any synthetic salt. Regardless its not going to be enough to make a tank iron rich or iron deficient in it of itself, compared to utilization.

Not sure if helps this thread but here are results of IO Reef Crystals via a calibrated Trident. Mixed at 35 ppt with RODI. Mixed with circulation for over 24 hours.

Has me questioning Trident or the salinity right off the bat LOL.

Why is that??? Im honestly asking for response? Salinity was check with freshly calibrated refractometer (which was double checked with teident calibration fluid) and trident was calibrated and double checked. Also, checked alk with hannah checker which gave very similar result. This was mixed from bags in 200 gallon box. I mix 60 gallons at a time. What did u expect umbers to be for Reef Crystals ?

All three are lower than typically measured for Reef Crystals. This doesn't mean bad, it just brings measurements into question (those levels will produce healthy corals). I'd suspect the salinity is lower than 35ppt.

I would agree with u from what I expected out of Reef Crytals. But im confident the test was accurate on my part. Disappointed, but confident in my accuracy. I use pretty much a whole bag when mix up so not a chance a full bucket not being stirred or anything. Ill text again when get to new box. But my test results also make sense from my tank parameters as well since was dosing to what i thought RC would give me. But when did a lot of water changes my parameters would dip and corresponds with the results.

Randy has a DIY calibration solution you can use to double check your salinity.
