It is becoming increasingly difficult to get salt (namely ESV J’s out of stock). I can go to my local Petco and get IO.

so as I start thinking about the 40 breeder, I think this is the salt to be used. We know the Alk will be within the proper range. We know the calcium is going to be low. If I want to run mag at 1400 would I dose the mag up before adding the dry calcium chloride?

is there a recipe for bringing up the mag and calcium levels of IO?

I find IO to mix to +/- 400 Cal and +/- 1500 Mag at 1.0264. If that’s not high enough, just calculate what you need to dose. I verify Salinity and Mag are where I want them before I make any adjustments to Cal or Alk.

I would yes. Dosing Mag can also increase Salinity. So I usually check Mag at around 1.026. If it's low, I add some Mag which will bring it to 1.0264. If it's fine, I just add more salt to get to 1.0264. It will take a little playing around till you get your groove, but once you do it's super easy.

out of grins and chuckles, I made up 5 gallon yesterday...early afternoon. I just tested that water, and probably will again after 3pm.

If I recall, this box of IO tested up high previously. Has anyone else gotten calcium/magnesium tests of IO that are basically almost perfect for a reef? (Note: I'm not saying the salt isn't good for a reef, just usually based on my readings took some cooking to get there).

That looks like what my 5o gallon brute rings up with. 10.5 420. Mag?

My reef is 8.5 and 420. I just dose accordingly.
