I wanna get a protein skimmer for my reef aquarium since it's got a heavy bio load and I cant really do alot of water changes to help with that cuz of work and school. So, I was wondering if instead oceans protein skimmer is worth it? I've seen alot of videos on it and a lot of people say its really good. I dont really wanna spend alot of money on a protein skimmer rn since I dont have a sump and do plan on upgrading later down the road when i move out. The system is a 75 gallon and I'm currently running it with HOB filters and about to add a HOB refugium with some racemosa.

Not a bad unit but take a look at aqua Maxx, nyos and reef octopus

When I first started in this hobby a few decades ago I used a sea clone skimmer on each of my tanks. They’re better than no skimmer and at times they would work decently well.
I actually still use one on my qt tank because everything on it has to be hob and I still have some from many years ago.

I would go with any other brand first, but if the sea clone is the only skimmer that fits your budget and tank then it’s not awful, but I wouldn’t say its good.

I've seen videos of people modifying it with a water bottle. Have you tired it? If so, what's your opinion on it?

I have never seen that mod. It seems like being able to improve the skimmer with a water bottle tends to show that it’s not the best design.

I've looked at all three but those are put of my budget
Im not keen on design and if you end up being unhappy with it, you will find yourself buying a different unit and end up at that price anyway.
The three units mentioned are reliable, great performance and Good resale
A little more budget is the ice Cap line of skimmers

I had one still do its collecting dust deep in the closet. I switched to a reef octopus and wish I would have bought the octopus the first time. It was ok but I always had to fiddle with it. The seaclone overflowed more than a couple of times. It's ok for what it is but most likely you will replace in a year or so.

Seaclone worthless. As good as the Wooden air stone units

Would the aquamaxx 1.5 be enough for a heavy bio load tank? I have an eel and 2 tangs, a fox face and yellow wrasse with 2 clownfish. With plans to add more fish

I think it would be ok for that and worlds better than a SeaClown. Maybe a bit small if you’re adding more fish but anything bigger is at least a $100 jump in price.

I had a seaclone, it was good but the pump in the tank kept releasing from the glass and causing air leaks from the in the tank connections.
I purchased an aquamaxx 1.5 and haven't looked back, I added some modifications to it, but overall it's all original after 2 years and sucking out all the gross stuff that's needed to get out.

Should be ok but you may have to empty cup frequently and eels are messy feeders which dont tolerate nitrate well so consider best as possible but over the seaclone and I.O. units
