My intake pipe in the overflow box is making a horribly loud gurgling noise. It appears that it's getting air as the pipe opening isn't fully submerged. I figured I could probably add a piece to the pipe but don't want to do anything that will negatively affect the flow. It's the pipe on the right in the picture I attached.

Can you lower the pipe at all so that it becomes submerged?

I had a similar issue; the bubbling/gurgling.
You need to give it a snorkel.
I inserted a piece of tubing about 1/4 the diameter of the pipe. one end in air,the other end a foot or so into the drain, past the bend.

It can be tough to quiet a single drain.
If this were my tank I would convert your return pipe to a drain and plumb the return line to a over the back wall return.
With 2 drain lines you would do what's called a Herbie drain.
They are very common and usually very quiet.

Is there any type of valve on the return line to the sump? Closing in on it will solve the problem if you have one

If you have a single drain system, restricting the flow by using a valve only spells disaster.
By restricting the flow, the chances of anything minor going in it makes the chances of a overflow likely.
May not happen right away, but it can happen and it will most likely be at night or when you are away.

4tanks above is correct. It should have a second elbow inserted into the existing one pointing straight down. The drilled whole with the airline adapter can’t vent air while the air is pouring out the front.
