I have a Fluval M90 with an InTank Media Basket in the first filtration chamber. For some reason if I use the media basket the display develops a sheen on the surface. For some reason the use of the basket prevent adequate surface skimming and I don’t quite understand why. It doesn’t matter if there’s anything in the basket or not.

Any suggestions or theories? I’d like to be able to use the basket with some media and filter floss.

I just put the basket back in a couple hours ago so it hasn’t built up much yet. But you can see it starting to develop on the surface.

You have to either increase the gph in the sump compartment or lower the water level in the back. The media basket is blocking flow to the back chambers allowing proteins and particulate matter to move back into the display.

There is no way to lower the water level in the back aside from draining and cutting the tooth depth lower, which at this point I’m just not going to do. I could attempt to raise the display level slightly. I have InTank’s overflow tooth attachment (basically a mini overflow box that sits on the teeth of the overflow) which could be used to raise the display’s water level by .5-.75”. I did purchase a new return pump thinking that more gph should help pull more flow trough the filtration thus helping with the surface skimming. I have yet to install it though. Hopefully this weekend I’ll have time to.
