I know there's lots of discussion on adding hydrogen peroxide in tanks. It was either in this forum or another one I frequent that someone was talking about a Sochting Oxydator. Several posters are against using HP at all. But I'm interested in the SO, and not for curing algae, though I occasionally have outbreaks of it.

When I do, I find that the water is low in mag and by dosing that the algae goes away. The reason I'm interested in it is for the dissolved oxygen it puts in the water and at a very low, constant rate. I watched a utube video on the SO and it really peaked my interest. Very hard to get these things in the US--I looked. I would need the medium size and the one site that offered it was sold out if it.

I use HP in my 6800-gallon pond to treat fish for abrasions, and to kill algae. It's worked great for that, though it's a large dose one or twice a spring/summer depending on the problem.

Does anyone here use the SO, and what are your impressions?

I'm pretty new at SW aquariums--less than two years--but have been keeping koi for 15 years. I just like the idea of as much O2 as could be provided in the tank. I think it would benefit everything. The thing that intrigues me about the Oxydator is it would put it in in small, constant, amounts instead of dosing with HP. So what ever benefit it would be for algae (not really a problem here as long as I keep an eye on the mag) mostly it would benefit corals and fish, I would think.

Very few of the many wonderful reef tanks around the world use added oxygen. Reef tanks have a lot of things koi do not that add O2, such as corals and macroalgae when they synthesize, and skimmers that provide a lot of aeration, as well as the fact that reefs usually have more turbulance.

Personally, I'd advise you as a new reefer to focus on other issues. :)
