Anyone know of any crazy looking hermit crabs that are as reef safe as a crab can be?
I’ve seen Halloween hermits around, but aside from that all I’ve really ever seen are the usuals: Blue legs, red legs, and zebras.

The Red Dwarf Hermit Crab (Clibanarius rutilus) are super cool they look like just this red orange type of hermit crab but they like are constantly pitter pattering like theirs way more movement from them compared to others I have noticed. You draw your eyes more to them because of their unusual movement i'd say. Another cool crab( I know not a hermit) Is a pitho crab, they look way more unusual compared to the other crabs and they are excellent CUC.

Not a hermit crab , but porcelain crabs are pretty cool. I have 2 in my tank . Never caused any problems

I've seen some Hidden Hermits (Calcinus latens) which are surprisingly colorful - ReefCleaners carries them and a bunch of other neat and usual hermits. Saltwaterfish.com also carries them. Both also carry the Staghorn Hermit, which is quite unusual (you need to be prepared to feed the hydrocoral they carry, which is NPS, though, so that is a major drawback with these).

BlueZooAquatics also has some interesting ones like the Flame Tip and Orange Knuckle hermits.

Not a lot of people keep unusual hermits that I've seen, so I can't vouch for the reef-safeness of the hermits beyond saying that - generally speaking - the smaller the hermit, the safer.
