Interesting 'New' LED Light

Is it?

For 50% more diodes?

Even if they were $800, they would be 2/3s the cost.

Yes, it is.

They are $800 and that’s a hefty price.

50% more? I didn’t mention anything other than price. So I’m not sure where you pulled that number...

He’s comparing them to Radions. ReeFis have more diodes than Radions.

The Reefi Extremes are $750, not 800.

I know exactly what he was getting at , but I never mentioned radions. 750 rounds close enough to 800, especially after taxes.

Either way, a hefty price tag, that’s all I ever said.

His website was down when I was research the lights.

From a forum discussion, the developer stated that Deluxes have the same number of diodes as Radions. Extremes have 50% more than that.

I would not completely agree that he competing with Ecotech. He looks like he is going mainly after Orphek.

A $750 light compared to an $1100 light...that’s different

Again all I said was it’s a pricey light. Not sure why that ruffles feathers.

I think it’s because when you say it is pricey it sounds like you think it isn’t a good value.

I challenge you to find a 200+ watt light with 72 Cree and Luxeon diodes for less.

I challenge you to find a 216 watt light with 72 Cree and Luxeon diodes for less.

Cost doesn’t equate value, high or low. The light is expensive is all I’ve stated.

Value or not

You can’t buy the parts for $750

He has included lime and amber diodes for human eye aesthetics, but very low numbers of them relatively speaking.

When Ecotech adds 2 greens and 2 ambers 2 reds to their lights, they are a much more important overall part of the light. I would love to reflow those off and put some sub 400nm diodes instead.

The diodes are quality diodes. The web based interface? That looks kludgy as all get out. I am looking at Dana’s data and would live to see an autopsy of one of the lights.

Here's a graph showing time-course PPFD. Recall this is at the bottom of the tank.

These aren’t the Chevy economy cars of the led world, they are the Porsches

Pricey is relative. The value is definitely there if the quality holds up.

Your example doesn’t rationalize. Luxury prices don’t equate to value.

Again all I said was the light is expensive. Not sure why everyone is getting offended by that.

Of course they do! Do you really think that you are getting the same size engine/power/torque/chassis/brakes on a Economy car as you do a Porsche/Audi/BMW?

Wow, this looks like a great fixture. Great contender in the LED market, so it seems. How long has this been on the market?

All I know is that these are at least the second iteration. I'll ask Daniel.

Although I've only had my Photon V2+ for about 7 months now, I'm always interested in other companies and technologies out there. Luckily Logan provides excellent after sales support, but should I ever want to "upgrade", these look promising; just like Orpheks. I don't know why, but I tend to avoid wanting to purchase Radions, so the fact this uses some great LEDs makes it so much more appealing (Cree, LumiLED - maybe new name for SemiLED?)

These do look to be some sweet lights. I remember maybe 5 years ago I think it was when they started offering lights and they were a head of the curve then. I think perhaps they were focused on more diy? If I am remembering it correctly. I don't know if they are quite enough to pull me off my orpheks, but pretty close.

Went into the lab this morning and used an Ocean Optics spectrometer to analyze the ReeFi's spectral qualities. I had some concerns that there was not enough green light that could be absorbed by the accessory pigment peridinin by analyses proved me wrong. The nine independent channels:
400 nm (actually peaking at 404nm, with about half of output in the UV-A range.)
420nm (actual peak at 422nm)
Violet (peaks at 426nm)
Royal Blue (peaks at 448nm)
Blue (peaks at 468nm)
Lime (broad spectrum peaking at 551nm)
Amber (peaks at 594nm)
Warm White (blue shoulder at 450nm and higher phosphor broadband radiation)
Cool White (blue shoulder at 444nm and higher phosphor broadband radiation)
The graph shows spectral quality of this luminaire with all 9 channels at full intensity. Maximum PPFD (or PAR if you will and measured by an Apogee MQ 510 meter) at the bottom of the tank was found to be 477 (some light reflected by the glass) and 1200 just under the water's surface.
The tank is 24" deep, so the sensor was ~23" below the water line and ~26" from the luminaire.
