Sorry in advance for all the questions...

I have a 40g 36 x 15w x 16d and I wanted to install a CPR RSS DX 24 which is 18" wide and 5 1/2" wide. Will this be a problem with my lighting hitting my corals in the future? I won't have corals for a while but I am thinking ahead. I realize the width of the overflow box is about 1/3 of the overall width of the tank and I may rethink my approach if this is going to be an issue. Thanks!

You will have "some" obstruction but with careful rock and coral placement I don't think it will be too bad.

Also depending on the type of light, and mounting angle if any, you might be able to angle the spread of the light so that it hits under the over-flow.

I'd look into something slimmer, especially since your tank is on the smaller side. Look into external overflow boxes, I'm able to have only 1.5" of space taken up on the wetside, leaving plenty of room and no light blockage!

Why not a 700gph Glass-Holes kit.....much smaller.

Have you already purchased the CPR RSS??

Redfishbluefish I want to have a long overflow as I understand that the surface skimming capabilities are much better the wider I go. Also I'm doing the the beananimal overflow method with three pipes so it needs to be fairly long anyway. I am kind of reluctant to do an external box just because it seems a little more prone to leakage. I am very concerned about water damage I have had a lot of bad experiences with water damage (not aquarium related).

Have you may be considered DIY-ing the over-flow?

Surface skimming is very important like you mentioned, but on a 40g you aren't going to need half of your total tank length to be skimmed, this might be better for a much larger tank, but in my opinion you wouldn't need that much on a 40.

+1

I have a 40B and I made my own internal overflow box. It's about 1/2" wider than the glass-holes box, and about 1/4" less deep.

I've never had surface skimming issues and I feed heavily.
