Hi introducing myself...
I am a 20+ year fish tank owner... and love all things aquatic! I received my first fishtank when I was about 8 years old... and my parents had to tell me that sadly I could never have a dog due to allergies but they bought me fish instead. I have kept fish tanks ever since minus the early 20s when i was traveling.
Currently I have 6 fish tanks. Three are permanently set up and three are used for QT / HT.
In my office I have a 4 foot 50 gallon planted Freshwater tank. It has been broken down a few times but has had water in it for 20 years! The tank is lit with powercompacts drilled in the hood from an old lighting set up. I use both 10K and blue actinic bulbs to bring out the best color in the fish while still growing the plants. It is an easy set up and barely needs maintenance. I can't seem to rid myself of my old standard fishtank. For filtration I use 2 HOB filters with filter media and carbon.
In my Living Room I have a 48 gallon 3ft bowfront Reef systems. This system has been running for 18 years but it started as a FOWLR. Currently it is lit with a LED Razor system that I absolutely LOVE! I have powerheads for circulation and a HOB skimmer that does a fantastic job. Inside the tank I have 4 - 6 inches of live sand / 50lbs live rock / 2 BTA / 1 ocellaris clown fish / cleaner shrimp / fire red shrimp / cuc. Currently in QT to join the tank are the following fish: Pygmy angel / starry blenny / green clown goby / Zenia / mushrooms / Sea fan / Zoa / other pretty coral that I fancied.
In my basement I have a 4 foot 75 gallon with 20 gallon sump. This tank has been running for 2 years and is my experiment. If I could figure out the sump and do a reef it was always my plan to go bigger in the basement! I have Metal Halide lighting with T5s light for this tank. The heat from the MH can be a tad of a problem in summer but the SHIMMER is to die for. I only use filter socks / skimmer and heater in the sump. The tank inhabitants: 3 inches live sand / 70 lbs live rock / 2 powerheads / Mandarin / blue tang / yellow tang / coral beauty pygmy angel / clown shrimp goby w pistol shrimp / CUC / sea star (I am wondering about this guy?).
My inclination is to be slow... prudent with fish. I research first... ask lots of questions and READ. My new line of questioning and interest is on fish nutrition. I never think my tanks are ready so after years of having fishtanks I realize I don't have great photos of them. I am always waiting to take photos when the tanks are perfect! and that day never comes...
Oh and my allergies are better now.. So I also have a puppy Jett he is my avatar. He loves to sit in my lap when I watch the fish.. sadly I am never watching my fish b/c my hands are always fighting a xenia overtake of my basement reef.
I also have two kids a job and a husband..... They think I am odd for my fish addiction but my husband supports it 100%.
Neptune!
