First of all thanks for having me. I’m sorta kinda new. I had a FOWLR about 9-10 years ago. Wasn’t really successful. Didn’t understand enough about the hobby. Now I’ve matured a bit and done some reading to understand most of the basics.
This time I have a simple 75 gal tank with a magnaflow 360 canister. Roughly 50lbs dry rock, with 60lbs of crushed coral. Wave maker, Philion 165w Led light. Nothing real fancy yet but slowly painting my masterpiece. I was back and forth with trying to decide on filter or sump. I didn’t trust myself enough to build a sump or let alone drill my tank. Needless to say im
Still trying to read and understand best practices.

I just introduced some
Clowns to start my cycle with them and some stability. I plan on getting some LR from my LFS this weekend to help seed my tank.
I would love to learn more about keeping corals so any guidance or input would be appreciated!
Thanks for having me!

Not that I wish to tell people what to do..but cycling with fish is a little cruel to the fish. You would be better off buying a store shrimp (small) and tossing it in there to cycle..or better yet...get some MicroBacter7 to 'instacycle' your tank so that your poor clown's gills wont burn from the ammonia.
Anyways..good luck!!

Building a sump isn't hard, and drilling a tank although nerve wracking isn't really that bad either as long as you take your time. Remember anytime you're not sure if you can do something there is a large community of knowledgeable people on the forum who can help.

Hello and welcome!!

I'm fairly new as well, only about 6 months in, but I'm planning to convert my 75g planted tank soon, and I'm also I'm the fence about canister or sump, mine is currently on a canister.

Anywho, just 2 clowns in that much water volume won't produce enough ammonia to burn their gills, unless you're adding ammonia, which if you've got fish in, DON'T ADD ANY AMMONIA, this is only if you're cycling fishless. Today's market provides lots of options to get that cycle Kickstarted though, lots of bacteria in a bottle options. I used 'bio spira' from instant ocean. I had nitrates in 2 days, I checked by dosing ammonia and it was processed in 24hrs to nitrate. Pretty quick cycle start.

Also, rock opinions vary greatly, using all dry you get a more sterile system with less hitchhikers, using live rock gets lots of bio diversity, but also unwanted pests and algea. I did both, mostly dry rock and added live on top.

Have fun!
