Hi all, my name is Jonathan from toasty Davis, Calif.

I'm not new to reefing but my first go was not successful. I did all the rookie mistakes, I put livestock in too fast, I tried to expand to fast, I overspent too fast.

That first experience ended in a midnight donation of all my livestock to a "generous" recipient who took all my beautiful creates for free. But at least he did save them. It isn't really worth rehashing why and how that all went down.

But I've trolled the sites for 5 years wondering if I should give it another go. Why wife is a big N-O. But if I do things slowly and modestly, I don't think she'll kill me.

I am considering something in the 20-40g region. Something compact, AIO style, and aesthetically pleasing. My focus is on either a Red Sea system or a Waterbox system. The free giveaway definitely opened my eyes to how these systems have improved in the last 6 years.

And recommendations? Any EASY modifications that I'll appreciate doing up front? Stock light or Radion (again). Apex (again) or cheaper solution? I appreciate your guidance. Thank you.

There is no reason to “need” an apex. They might be nice for monitoring features but definitely far from necessary.

Welcome back to the hobby!

Is there an alternative you'd recommend? Apex gets some much marketing that it is hard to understand what is cheaper and reasonably similar. Thanks.

alternative is not to use a controller. I have had an Apex in the box for 3 months, waiting for a new tank, and my existing tank is doing fine with a drop-in thermometer, no ATO (you should absolutely get one) and lights on timers
