Randy.
I dose my own mixture of potassium iodide and it seems I've been heavy handed with the dosing.

Salifert test readings are as follows: iodide at 0.06 ppm and iodate/iodine at >0,2 ppm, the latter is very concerning as it is probably much higher as a precipitate forms during the testing indicating much higher levels than the value stated above.

This has affected SPS corals in the following way: stopping of growth, less PE, thin flesh that looks burnt and RTN withing 72 hrs in "shortcake" sp.

Do you think the iodate /iodine levels will deplete naturally either by skimming or uptake by macro-algae e.t.c. in a short time or is water change intervention necessary?
The damage has been done already!

Once again, test continuously is the rule, if dosing :)

Yes, it will deplete on its own.

FWIW, when I dosed iodate instead of iodide, I found it accumulates, presumably because it is taken up more slowly than iodide. It may not be taken up at all, but rather must naturally transform into iodide before being taken up by many organisms.

You don't believe dosing either is necessary Ramdy?

No, I don't. I dosed iodide for years. When I stopped dosing as an experiment, nothing appeared to change, and many folks have had that experience.

I know some folks think it useful, but I've not seen convincing evidence of it.

I always thought they were beneficial for soft corals like yellow leathers but this was 10 yrs ago. Much has changed since then :-)

I cannot prove it is not useful, but I had thriving leathers and other soft corals without it. There's no evidence in the scitntific literature that leathers have a need for iodine that I have ever seen.

Is that a blue carpet anemone? If you need to drag that yellow leather I'd be more than happy to take a frag!
