Is this the correct type of iodine to be used for a coral dip? Trying to help stop some tissue recession on a fungia plate. Would also like to learn about dosage.

My thread on the fungia:

The iodine they had CVS:

I'd say @Randy Holmes-Farley could give a scientific answer here. Looking at the ingredients, I'd be concerned about the pareth 25-9 that is a surfactant.

I don't know what folks prefer to use for dips these days (Lugols vs Betadine vs Povidine vs entirely different chemicals) since I never dipped anything, but Pareth 25-9 is not likely a problem in that situation. :)

Thanks for the input. I'm surprised there isnt already a stickied write up on this. Curious what people are using and at what dosage. My LFS didn't have any iodine dips.

I use Lugol's. I've seen it at Petco before. You can definitely get it from Amazon.

Oh yeah, I forget about the petco. I'll have to give them a call. Wasn't considering amazon because I was trying to get the dip done asap.

I hear that! The last few times I needed something at an off hour they surprisingly had it.

Stopped by on my way home today and they didn't have any. So I ordered some kent marine lugols from amazon. Guess I'll have to wait for that to arrive unless someone ok's the cvs iodine I got and educates me on dosage.

Iodine is not very effective against pests or algae. I think the concentration would have to be quite high.

I use some iodine in my last rinse.

I'm trying to battle some tissue recession, not pest or algae. What iodine do you use? At what concentration? And why do you use it?

I use lugols. I use “some”. Lol.
So several drops depending on the size of the bucket.

Iodine is an antiseptic and antibacterial.
If the recession is not a wound or infection I wouldn’t really use it.
I guess it’s fine if its a profilactic application like I use it for.
I also use revive for the same reason.

I see. I'm just guessing on what's causing the recession but the first day I had the fungia I put it on the frag rack. But then moved it to the glass bottom the next morning as it had moved to where it was half way off the rack. It was there and seemingly fine for two weeks then I moved it to the DT. It has been there for about a month. So I was assuming I either damaged it by having it on the frag rack or possibly I damaged it when moving it. I didn't realize that you could damage it so eisily, but in reading about it I found out it's tissue needs to be sucked in before being exposed to the air because it could damage itself pulling in the tissue too quickly. Check the pictures of it on my fungia thread, link is in first post. It looks to me like the recession started on the bottom. Possibly from the frag rack? So I'm just guessing but I think it may be caused by damage so I was going to try an iodine dip. Figure it can't hurt right? I have ordered some lugols but wont be here till Wednesday. I do have some revive on hand, as well as the iodine from CVS.

Fungia can get tissue damage if the contact sharp edges. I use surgical gloves when handling corals to keep the oils and bacteria on my hands from effecting the corals tissue. Since this is tissue problem. Take some water from the tank and add lugols till you get a tea like color in the water. Use a turkey blaster to lightly move water over the area. This will help with bacteria infections.

Here is a video I did on a coral in my care.

Here is the coral after 6 months and the area of damage is growing back.
