I've heard - here, YouTube and other places that iodine supplementation can be good for zoa health and coloration. What is the difference between supplementing with iodine vs. iodide? Also - my little zoa tank is only 5 gallons. Does anyone know what specifically to dose with, how much and how often with a 5 gallon tank?

Hi @ChrisP,

I have heard the same thing. But also afraid to add anything I can’t test for. But the product you get should have recommended dosing instructions per gallon. But without knowing where you at and where you want to be it’s like shooting in the dark lol.
If tou do decide to dose- I would do less then recommend dose - that’s just me personally.
Good luck and HAPPY REEFING!

I add probably 6 drops or more a week of lugols solution to my 50 gallon zoa dominated and my 25 gallon zoa dominated and have seen no adverse affects I dose less on the 25 gallon and I do water changes frequently so the levels never stay high if they ever get high...

Have u seen any benefits to dosing iodine?
Benefits not sure it’s related to the dosing but I get better growth and color but could be the amino acids as well whatever the case may be I am a believer in dosing iodine lol
You can use aqua vitro fuel yeah... didn’t like it too much you get other trace elements in there too which is cool plenty of people use it and have nice coral though

I just started dosing Seachem Reef Plus which contains iodide along with amino acids and a lot of other things. I have no idea if this is sufficient for iodine dosing. I still don't really understand the differences between iodide and iodine

From google
Iodine rarely occurs as the element, but rather as a salt; for this reason, it is referred to as iodide and not iodine

iodide is the ion form of iodine.

Here’s another thread with good info on iodine vs iodide

iodide which is the only form of iodine available to corals for uptake.

Yes iodide is readily absorbed by corals but it is also bundled up very quickly so it doesn’t stay in suspension too long unfortunately which is why dosing is sometimes required but you don’t have to many salts come with enough

You can use aquavitro fuel. It has iodine along with other trace elements. Directions on bottle.
When I checked out Aquavito Fuel on Amazon, it only claims to raise magnesium levels. Not sure why this applies to zoas.

From Aquavito website about their Aquavito Fuel

Thanks so much! Then obviously the Amazon description was incorrect.

I add 2 ml of iodine weekly and my zoas are full and a few colonies now

I have heard the same thing and been told by a few People in the hobby a lot longer than myself, one being a reef shop owner (for well over 25 years). they all stated to me that iodine is much different than iodide and the use of iodine is very dangerous to corals and fish alike. So I would tell you NOT to use iodine.

Iodide is a safer use of iodine for reefs can not put pure iodine in tank corals will die
Lol don’t like fritz personally... I use tropic Marin pro and bio actif carries everything I need and nothing I don’t.... like I said I dose lugols which contains both iodine and potassium iodide.. the way this interacts with aquarium water makes it readily available to corals but it also gets bound up quickly so I do frequent dosing...
