Hi, I have been adding lugol's iodine (potassium iodide) daily to my 900litre system to maintain the iodiine at 0.06. I have noticed that the potassium in the tank is now 450 but I have not been adding any other potassium additive.

Can you recommend another iodine supplement that I can use instead that will not raise the potassium further?

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Di

The Lugol's did not push the potassium to that level.

Even if you added the equivalent of 0.06 ppm iodine via Lugols every day for 2 years, you'd only push the potassium up by less than 9 ppm, even with no water changes or consumption.

That said, if I were to dose iodine (and I don't any more, although I did for many years, never saw a difference when stopping), I wouldn't use Lugols as it adds an unnatural and reactive form (I2) to the tank. It is probably fine, but iodide is a more natural choice.

Hi Randy,

Thanks for your reply.

I will look for some iodide when I go to my lfs next time & leave dosing any iodine until then.

Other than adding the balling bicarbonate and calcium supplements I add the zeo additives, zeozym, zeobak, biomate and coral snow. Have you any suggestions of why the potassium has gone so high?

Thanks Di
