Before you jump on me for making ANOTHER thread about this…let me explain.

My tank was originally painted blue on the back. I contemplated about going black because I want my fish to stand out.

After months of deciding, I went black! It was awesome and the fish coloration was outstanding. It made the tank look a bit smaller, but it was really nice.

But here was the problem: every little particle/spec/dust etc showed like a sore thumb. My tank looked dingy and musty. Here’s a short video of the dusty appearance.

I’ve tried EVERYTHING to eliminate the particles. 1 micron filter socks, water changes, closing all pumps etc. I don’t know where it’s coming from, but it makes the tank look dirty and gross.

SO…after a few months of going black it finally hit me that I’ve never had these particles before!

PS: I had to get custom black acrylic sheets to go from the INSIDE of my tank because my tank was against the wall and pre painted a bright blue color. And the overflows are also prepainted. (250 gallon). Having the background removable on the inside of the tank made cleaning 100 times easier, so I will never go back to the regular painted back. I just take it out, vinegar soak it and put it back. And every spot goes away! It’s a perfect solution for my large tank with rock work that I’m afraid to break apart.

Anyway, yesterday I found this nice blue background (plastic roll sheet) from LFS and I glued it to my black acrylic sheets. It looked so awesome. It was a little darker than my original blue color, so fish slightly stood out. I still find that it was a bit too light, but magically all the particles were gone. The fish looked like they were flying for the first time instead of swimming in the dust bowl.

But the only “issue” was that the glued paper background looked so wrinkly and bubbly. It looked fake and cheap.

So…it appears I want a darker blue background (but not TOO dark that dirt will show). I also want it to be single acrylic piece instead of gluing a background to a sheet.

PS: my lighting is on the whiter side, so every background looks lighter than how it appears outside of tank.

Im making this thread just to clear my thoughts.

Here are my blue options.

This is my original painted background (from the outside of the tank). Just as I felt a few months ago, the background is too bright which makes fish look nonexistent.

Actually looks good. Mine happens to be black

This is the blue with no lighting (phone flash)

Someone on here had a blue background that sort of faded in a way that really added to the sense of depth in their tank.

my oceanic has a black background. Next tank I get I want the blue I discribed

I think I made up my mind. Judging by the picture of my overflow (that I posted here) it appears I currently have 2051.

I believe I like 2050 the most.

I’d go with the 2050. But I think you have unrealistic expectations. Part of having a reef tank with live rock and corals and all the other animals/microfauna we keep is that there is going to be marine snow/plankton/floaties/whatever you want to call it in the tank. No amount of filter socks or surface skimming or flow is going to make it disappear. Personally, I think that a small amount adds to the realism, helps me to suspend disbelief and believe that I’m looking at a real piece of reef. Obviously if it’s excessive, and I don’t see that in the video you posted, you may need to increase your mechanical filtration, but again, I don’t think you have an abnormal amount.

Is that a urinal puck ?

Just joking …
I like the idea …
I bought a bunch of smaller tanks from a lfs in the early 90’s
I believe they were 30 gal cubes . All with a single stand pipe to connect them together .
They were all painted similar to the 2050

looked great until the algae started

This is why I went with the tank I did. It's not wet yet... couple weeks. The marine snow always kind of bugged me... I know I know! I keep my water crystal clear and there is always the particles/snow floating around. I prefer the black background. I ordered a Fijicube 108 INT (48x24x22.5). This tank comes in different flavors: External overflow, Internal overflow, and peninsula. I got the internal because it has intakes at 3 different levels in the water column to filter out the particles:

Anyway, I get it... OCD is OCD

Actually, who am I kidding? I don’t think I’ll ever accept those particles.

This was a response to MaxTremors. I don’t believe the particles in my tank were “minimal”. They really bug me.

Im definitely going to go with a lighter background to hide the specs. Why not? I don’t have to live with something I don’t like.
