i am new to saltwater and have just bought some rodi water from the fish store to fill up my new tank with. When I bought the bottles home I checked the TDS and it was 17ppm is safe to fill a new aquarium with?

Typically shooting for 0 tds
I personally wouldn't use it if that were a true reading.
Are you sure your testing method is calibrated ?
Maybe call the last where you bought it and see if they say what they tested it at

Guess it depends what those dissolved solids are. Where is the source water coming from (eg treated tap, well, etc)?

Yes, it entirely depends on what the 17 ppm TDS is. I personally wouldn't use it, but it may be fine. Even 1000 ppm TDS may be fine, or not.

0 ppm TDS made from drinkable water is a good assurance that it is fine.
