Is 17ppm TDS safe for my reef tank?

I am new to saltwater and have just bought some rodi water from the fish store to fill up my new tank with. When I bought the bottles home I checked the TDS and it was 17ppm is safe to fill a new aquarium with?

no harm and should be ok to use, IMO. There are people that use tap water for reef tank!
it is possible that your container is a bit dirty.
I never wash my rodi reservoir, so I know for sure TDS will read a bit high if I test directly in the container.
I've always read my RODI water sample from a new clean cup and throw the cup away each time.

If you are planning on this being a reef tank, I would recommend making the effort to find zero TDS water.

You might want to contact your pet store. If they are selling water to you as RO/DI it should be zero TDS...

I wouldn’t use it in a established tank but it should be fine for the initial fill. Make sure going forward you are using “0” TDS water. Unless your just setting up a really small nano It will probably pay in the long run to buy your own RO system.

I would agree with this. I would speak to the LFS and get 0 tds. There is no reason to take any chances or start off on the wrong foot.

I used tap water for years and still do sometimes you’ll be ok but I’d let them know their membrains are depleting.

PSA. In know way or form am I telling or anyone else to use tap water.
