Is a maintenance free sandbed reasonably possible?

I'm looking at building a nano tank anywhere from a 20 gallon cube to perhaps a 40ish or so gallon 24x24xX. It seems that the going trend right now is bare bottom, but I really do like the look of sand.

I'm wondering, if I had a sandbed that was 1" or less thick is it possible to have the right amount of sifters to keep it clean? What sort of team would your CUC consist of, and remember it's somewhat of a small tank.

I ask, because if I had the tank on auto water change, it seems silly to then have the need to vacuum the substrate. I wouldn't mind perhaps every 6 months going in there with a stick/spoon and stir up the bed to make sure the filter pad gets all the detritus. But adding vacuum the sandbed to my weekly husbandry would seem silly.

Stir it weekly so you get minimal detritus build up. Less chance of trouble and your corals will love it.

Well I’ve never cleaned or touched my sand bed in nearly 4 years, so I can confirm it’s completely maintenance free!

I can’t see the need to be honest, certainly mine is part of the whole denitrification process in the deeper parts.

Maybe if you have coarser, heavier sand and killer flow.
I can't speak to long-term, but in the first 6 months, I'd think it pretty unlikely that you wouldn't be doing some light maintenance (at least) every couple of weeks. From what I understand, you either want to stir it up semi-regularly, or not at all... though probably less of a concern with 1/2 inch of sand.
