Is a Reef Aquarist a Nerd?

I consider myself to be pretty darn cool but my 13 year old daughter would say otherwise! HA!

My wife though says I a nerd when it comes to the hobby. What do you think.

I believe it depends on how deep you are in to it on the technical side of things like light spectrums, MG levels and what they mean and things like that, if you just have some fish in a tank with some corals no, if you have every species name memorized that is in your system and know exactly what it needs and what not then yes I do believe you and I are nerds of the aquatic world LOL.

Even though I have very few fish my family says I'm on the "fish forum" or talking to my " fish friends".

They think I'm a dork but they sure like looking at the tank. The kids won't acknowledge it much but when friends come over they show it off and explain what all is in there.

Just because I'm reading an article about the chemical relationship of Alkalinity, Calcium, and Magnesium in the home aquarium does not make me a nerd.

Unless you are anybody else on the planet that doesnt have a tank....

Would think any less than main stream hobby counts us as being nerdz. But this one in particular makes u somewhat of an ecosystem creater or in smaller terms a GOD lol. Besides i play WOW so i qualify as a nerd

lol, to be sure tho, reefing is one of those hobbies where many people will look at you strange as you spend $300 on rocks and 1 inch frags but everyone always loves the tank!

I spend hours every day researching anything to do with aquatic life. I play college lacrosse and recently was offered to be able to fight in my first amateur MMA fight in AC so no I'm no nerd! And don't consider anyone. It's just what people are into.

I guess you could say we're REEF nerds. Just as some girl that's obsessed with make-up is a makeup nerd or a person who has a watch collection is a watch nerd. Everyone has their own hobby that keeps them busy! Gear heads are essentially gear-nerds

A geek can still be cool. They just get consumed by their interests/hobbies.

A nerd is a geek who is also socially awkward.

In summary, geeks can be cool. Nerds can not.
