Is a sump a MUST HAVE to keep SPS?

I was wondering if a sump is somethingI have to have to keep sps?

I have this cube w/ canopy and everything but I really dont want to put a giant sump under it,it is so annoying to deal with imo.

Could I just use 1 or 2 HOB canister filters(marineland magnums) and an Aqua C remora skimmer(This perform well,I have one on the 75gal) and be fine sumpless?

I guess im asking what advantages does a sump offer besides more flow in the tank and gallonage,so the parameteres don't change as fast?

my new project is just this in a nut shell.... you don't need all this fancy stuff man never did.... sure the hobby has advanced and the equipment got greater etc.... only thing that has really changed is people got lazy.... either you dont buy equipment or this or that and work your tale off OR!!!! buy equipment and get lazy like skipping water changes etc because you have good skimmer.... you could put live rock in that tank with a power head and a decent light above it with no other means of filtration and have a successful tank.... i have seen it done lol....

The biggest advantage to a sump (besides extra stability due to extra gallonage) is the ability to hide majority of your equipment (heater, skimmer, reactors) and to have a larger refugium. It makes it easier to make changes and anything added or done to the tank can be done to the sump instead of the tank directly. A sump is not necessary for sps, I had a 29 gallon with a hob filter, and a sea clone skimmer that handled sps just fine...just have enough flow, light, and keep your parameters stable.

I have never had a sump and have been keeping acros for almost 3 years. HOB skimmer and HOB fuge with a BRS reactor screwed into the wall. I started this way on a 20g tank and probably had my best growth and color in there.

my main SPS tank was sumpless- remember, all a sump does is allow you a place to put additional stuff, typically: Water, a skimmer, a heater, reactors/media, and a circulatory pump.

If you can fit all those things into your tank, or on your tank somehow (hang-on) then of course there's no need for a sump.

I disagree with TROYLEE ,you should be fine with your filtration and HOB skimmer. I have one of my tank running for 2 years now with SPS. My tank is truvu aquasystem 50R with good MH light, good flow, aquac remora (not pro) with mag3, no gfo and everything is doing good. GFO is WASTE of money. Good salt and regular water change should do the job IMHO.

So what is your means of po4 reduction???? Call it what you want but rawaphos is the bomb diggity!!!! You want excellent growth and color run some gfo...

Nope, not at all. My old 29 was sumpless. HOB cpr back bak, gfo and carbon ran passively in the HOB skimmer. Quality HOB skimmer and good water changes with quality salt is all you really need.

TROYLEE have stated before in this forum that he uses vodka and MB7 so he no longer used any GFO for phospate and nitrate because it's waste of money. I myself is been using Vodka and MB7 for 11 months now and my phos and nitrate are both zero. Why do I need GFO then? No need brother. KLR you dont need sump. End of thread.

I have kept 200g Mixed Reef with No Sump Never hada problem! SUMPS are just Way over rated by most people ! its just a place to hide equipment instead of Having unsighlty filter hanging on the Back And That Pretty much it !! Other than Fuge! part Now a Fuge will aid your tank in replenishing pod and lots of other beneficial life. But They make HOB Fuges too :cheers

Why do I have a strange feeling I know you??? Yes I have stated that but a safer way for him is to use gfo... If you read some of my latest post I have stopped the vodka... Also I have pretty much ran rawaphos the whole time when I did dose vodka... I change things up every few months...:tongue: kelby has had his share of problems I don't need to get him more discouraged by problems associated with vodka dosing... Also you need a great skimmer if your even gonna consider carbon dosing not something that it sounds like he is gonna do...

you could simply set it up with a canister filter and keep surface of water agitated and be perfectly fine....ive seen some pretty sweet sps setups like that...

It is not necessary but it sure does make life much easier. I'll never run one without a sump but I like the freedom of really doing nothing except keeping the fish fed.
