Is an Overflow Box really needed?

This is how my tank is set up with 2 bulkheads for my drain. Yes it noisy unless you turn your return your down. But I'm use to it now.

I'll have a gate valve on the 1 1/2" drain pipe, plus a vented stand pipe. Im pretty sure I can cut most of the noise down. (water wont be rushing down the 1 1/2" drain) Noise isn't a real issue for me since I have a dedicated fish tank room. I know it is for people who have tanks in their living room's.

So I just ordered the H2O and found Your post today. How did your set up turn out? Noisy? I saw this product in use at an aquarium show and just had to try it. Do you like how it functions for you in real life situation?
