Is anyone using a DIY Upflow Algae Scrubber?

thanks man. That's a nice simple design. I'm thinking of adding one to my fuge in place of the macro, but haven't decided on it yet.

I unfortunately don't have the estate for anything bigger or more complex. I'm excited to get it running.

I did add one to my fuge along with the macro. My main purpose is to promote copepod breeding for my mandarin. I really don't know how successful it is, but even with the cheato there is a small amount of growth on the algae scrubber and hopefully that's enough. Since you really can't see the pods I guess there's no way of knowing if they're breeding or not and flowing into the DT.

Actually you should get very large pods... up to 1/2 inch. Just let it get thick.

Those are amphipods you're referring to, correct? Mandarins eat copepods which I think are very very small.
