I have spent years caring for Tridacnas and finished my thesis about them. In the times I've cultured them this is the first time I've seen any Tridacnas with different patterns and coloration on their mantle. Is there any possibility of Chimerism in Clams? This maxima was found like this during the grading of the 1.5'' and lastly before it was sold it was 3" and the color and pattern remained the same during the grow-out stages

The image suggests that is a chimera clam. I was thinking that a maxima would not survive if it was a hybrid cross / chimera as the shell of the giant clams have different morphological characteristics. The image of a Maxima X Maxima - chimera is an interesting commentary on how clam shells develop to close properly.

I think I recall that Pacific East Aquaculture had experienced a similar individual chimera clam, I think Dr Mac posted a picture of that clam, a few years ago?

@PacificEastAquaculture - comments?

I am still not sure that is why I am asking this. But I ought to differ, in my opinion, there is a probability of a hybrid cross/chimera but it would have a meager chance of survivability and the possibility of merging. The morphology of the shell of the clam is determined by their broodstock eggs, so the shell will be mostly similar to its female gamet with my fair share of experience in hybridizing Clams.

I know which Clam you are referring to but the difference between that maxima and the one I had was the pattern. @PacificEastAquaculture only had mantle coloration differences but the one I had was both different on the pattern and the coloration on its mantle.

I am also interested in PacificEast's insights into this discussion

OP care to share you thesis? I am always looking into new info on clams.

Thanks

It's about hormonal concentrations that affect Giant Clam reproduction but is written in Bahasa. If you are looking into new info on clams it's quite hard due to laws on their conservation any research being done here needs a permit and the lengths to get one are a hassle.

finishing my thesis I used a lot of Aquaculture journals from https://www.sciencedirect.com/ just put ".." on the keywords you are looking for like "Clams"

Thanks for the info. Seems odd to me having that sort of research being restricted. Thanks again!

I know it is odd, but what can I say it is hard being in a developing country. I'm not saying that Indonesia isn't great but I just would like less corruption, and a better, and more transparent governing body.
