Is dosing even necessary in a reef?

doesn't it depend on type of coral ( lps/sps/softies) and the amount of corals crammed into the tank.
I have a 240lt tank full of lps and softies and far more fish than I want to admit to. I top up every few days and do a 25lt water change once every 4 wks. The only chemical I add is nopox.
I get my water from a friend who uses red sea coral pro salt and produces ro as I don't have an ro machine. My levels are always level and I see no need to add chemicals that might effect the 'balance'.

Its about usage and replenishment. Your tank (corals, coralline etc) uses x amount of alk daily. its best IMO to put that back in to make it available to the corals. If WC's meet that demand its prob fine. Keeping it Alk/cal limited is fine too, but you be pretty surprised at the difference dosing both make. Beyond sps, when I first began auto dosing the biggest change I saw was in the LPS. They began to split and make more heads regularly, as now they have more minerals(calcium) to make bone.
Changes in salinity btw, changes the concentration of the minerals.

Hahah. Yup.

I started stocking sps end 2011
All grown from small frags

Sps Corals grows with 1-2mm per day

Purple acropora valida

I think I have three of those in that row. The Valeda. The red digitata. And what we here call a frog skin.

Glen where do keep your alk at? And you No3 and Po 4?
Mine are higher than many but those three corals seem to be ok with and grow great.

As I recall you feed a lot! But I don't recal your nuteints as it's been a awhile since I delved in your threads. I believe I read several of them across the forums. Took me about three months too. Lol
I learned quite it from your method by the way. Thank you. I am no chemist though. I understand a fair amount and I get why it works. I just have different interests besides not having the knack.

What Glenn shows with his tank is that corals are removing elements all the time and by testing the water and dosing what they are removing you will have a healthy aquarium.

That,s the headline ..
it can be easily be done .
you just need to learn how.

What's your most expensive acropora guys that's doing well with your dosing method?

I would say all of Glenn's SPS are " expensive " when you see a mature stand of SPS in a aquarium it is very breath taking. An there is no need for fancy frags. When people have these small frags they better be colorful. Many of the high dollar SPS are slow growers that's why they cost the bucks. If they grew really fast they would not be worth a lot of money. That why you see these micro frags for sale.
