I use GAC passively just to ward off allopathy and help keep the water clear in my mixed reef. I'm not picky about the brand as long as it's GAC and not so fine that it escapes from a mesh bag. I really liked using pelletized GAC like Kent Products used to sell, but haven't found any in that form for a while.
