had this coral for about 6 months now and for 3 of the 6 it didn’t open is it dead?

That seems like a long time to be closed, but if it was dead it would rot away.

How is the flow? Too much flow and it won’t open. Wants moderate to low flow and moderate to low light.
 
Also have you moved it during this time mine close up for a while if moved or even if algae grows by them. They are resilient but finicky corals.

Algae did grow on top of it but i gave it a dip and clean it up but still didnt open
 
Mine looked the same as that a few weeks ago…I ended up moving it to get more lighting (from the corner to more middle of the tank)…opened up the next day and looks great now.

This guy is lacking water flow and you will need to aim flow more towards it - NOT at it OR move the coral towards the flow. You can start by giving the heads gentle bursts with a turkey baster to loosen the film on yhem and they should perk up
Moderate light and water flow is all they ask for

It’s hard to tell however this coral does seem to be lacking flow. I’ve found my leathers enjoy higher flow and higher lighting.
