As long as the display tank is thriving and the fish and especially the corals, who cares if the holding bucket is brown. Reef Crystals is a good salt and unless something changes in its parameters it will continue to be used. I just don't get the issue here.
 
I am not sure why you posted that here in the Meet and Greet forum as your first post lol but welcome :):)!! Lots of salt mixes have the brown residue...not harmful to anything.

Agreed! I use the Instant OCean Reef Crystals and it is just fine.
 
Welcome to R2R! Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals are fine salts that are used by a large number of respected and seasoned aquarists. This hobby has a tendency to want to 'optimize' everything. Without Instant Ocean I would almost certainly have never started keeping saltwater tanks.
