Hello everyone,

I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. I am taking this time working from home to set up my new tank. I have an Innovative Marine NUVO 20g Abyss Panoramic tank. My question concerns substrate. I have two reef tanks aleady build and both have been running for about 3 years. In both I used white-ish Carib-Sea aragonite live sand. However, I really like the look of black substrate.

My LFS had a big sale on substrate and I purchased some very fine solid black sand. It is not live, and i would venture to say that most people would use this in a fresh or planted tank. Do you all think that I could use this fine black sand in a reef tank? I have seen some videos and forum articles cautioning against using black sand or substrate in a reef tank due to various reasons. Do you think it is okay to use, if not are there any solid black substrates that are okay for a reef tank?

Thanks so much

I would not use it. As you mentioned there have been downsides related to black sand, enough IMHO to make it a bad choice.
