Is it possible to install a sump without drilling the tank?

My tank can't be drilled (because it's already running. The back only leaves 6 inch of space. And yes most importantly I'm lazy).

I've read that I can get a HOB overflow but not sure if it works or it will loose siphon when power is out. I want more inputs and opinions :/

Yes. I used a small pump to maintain siphon but it absolutely can be done with HOB. Someone may be able to link a nice slim profile one they recommend

If you are in my area, Ne Ohio, I have one you can have that is less than 6” deep I believe

I’ve read that the HOB filtration can be modified to work just like the Bean Animal Setup, and you can use hard plumbing or flex with ball valves to control flow. I’m not sure about the siphon breaking during a power outage, but I’m pretty sure that the setup prevents overflow as long as your tank isn’t overfilled.

I have an HOB overflow and it does they are made to not lose a siphon when the pump is off. Mine has been running without issues for 2 years. I do take the U pipes off a couple times a year to clean them out.

I just installed an Eshopps PF-1800 HOB and am really happy with it. It takes up just a tad under 5" off the back of the tank. Being a new tank I have powered everything off 10-20 times ( including over nights ) and it has never lost siphon.

I have an AIO Biocube but seriously looked into DIY sumps. There’s a lot of great YouTube videos out there showing how to build your own for much cheaper than buying one.

I am gonna follow I have a 20g I'd love to add a sump to because I hate this equipment in the display and I want more water volume. However where I live they are doing construction so sometimes I lose power for 15 mins every month or so, I'm worried if a hob overflow would cause the display or sump to flood in the case of an outtage

Get a small 10-20g aquarium during petco’s dollar per gallon sale and just use an aquarium safe silicone and acrylic if you’re afraid to cut glass for your baffles. I think you can also have sheets of glass cut at Home Depot.

I made my own Sump and couldn't be happier.
It's taylor made to exactly what I wanted in every aspect and made to fit my exact equipment & plumbing. Definite paralysis by analysis tho. I researched every what & why & pro & con of every aspect of sumps & all the layouts & baffles & drain styles & there is SO much info out there, but not altogether in one place somewhere. I should make "The Ultimate SUMP video" ....maybe "Sump Around!"

I have eshopps pf 800 and haven't lost syphon a single time in a year+. If power goes out the u tube remains full and as soon as power comes back the syphon continues. Don't need to do anything.
You need to think on redundancy in case that were to happen though, never know. In my case, I picked a sump where there is not enough water in the return chamber to overflow the tank if syphon is ever lost. And also the controller shuts off the pump if level on DT gets too high too. I put a hofer gurgle buster on the overflow and the tank is dead silent.

King of DIY, has good overflow setup with pvc that doesnt use siphon it uses held volume/pressure. Cheap too. Just pvc.
I put the link below. Make it, dryfit and test into tank you get for sump. And then if you like it, you can paint it black and build your sump while the paint cures and then put it all in place. This one, or any you buy or make should have the aqualifter he shows in the video so siphon never breaks, hook it & your powerhead to a battery backup like costco sells for computers & you're all set & safe. My backup runs three powerheads and wavemaker for 10 hours.
I would watch the video and then look through comments to see if anyone has had any negative feedback using it.

Have you done any videos? So far I was planning on doing the dollar per gallon sale and I can’t drill glass into my main tank

I drilled a running tank with a 90 degree adapter so it can be done.

DIY Peninsula style 75g Aqueon tank with Over the Back drain I built. Glass is relatively easy to learn to cut, just takes a little trial and error to master it, I am not a master yet, but I do cut a lot of my own glass. The 2 siphons have 1 way air valves in the top, used to remove air from the siphon and to keep the air out so it flows properly. In the last picture you may notice the outside drain box is not glass, I kept breaking the 1/4 bottom when I tightened the bulkheads so I went with a plastic basin on the outside of the tank. Pretty sure it was my fault I broke the bottom glass, the bulkheads left the glass to thin on the edges.
