Is it safe?

I don't know why nobody has responded to this yet. Yes, it's ok to cut off. Just go slow and stay at the base and it will be alright. It will probably stay closed for a little bit after but don't worry. Let us know how it turns out. Sorry no one got back with you sooner
 
I took a kent scraper to the ones that were on the back of my tank. It took them off with no problem and I'm sure they would have survived just fine if I kept them.
 
I grow them out on acrylic in my frag tank. Some have grown right up the glass as well and I think those are easier to cut. I razor blade them off in sheets sometimes and they glue down fairly well in mats of a half dozen or so.

I watched this and maybe I don't want to touch the zoa in my tank. This is some scary stuff.
