Just noticed today my maxima clam opened but the flaps are facing upwards?
Is this normal?

The flaps being up seems like too much flow, do they move around (going up or down) or just remain up?

If they move it’s likely too much flow but if they’re staying up it could be something like reaching for the light or just growing - Possibly a new row of scutes is occurring and causing it’s mantle to point up.

I can see on the side of the shell a new row forming .

That’s the issue. Not deadly, but definitely taking away from clam getting full par. I would just move the pump so that mantle can get back to normal
I’ve moved the pump back to where it was hoping it helps

If the mantle gets buffeted a little, it's not a big deal and clam will be fine. But, if the mantle is unable to open completely, it can cause some issues. They will move around until they can orient themselves according to the flow. The type of flow matters as well, it should be random and not constant (unless it's a gentle flow). New growth is good.

Glad I found this topic, I am experiencing the exact same behaviour with my clam. It does seem like the new growth of the shell is contributing to the behaviour. But it also seems like it is not fully open.

(The nips on the mantle where already on it when I bought it, and it seems to be healing nicely and the white dots are spirbid worms, but no piramid snails have been observed.)

The mantle is moving a little but but no flow is direct on the mantle.
