I noticed the stand doesn't have a bottom. Does anyone know if that is normal? Do I need to add a sheet of plywood or is it okay for it to just be open to the floor underneath?

The load is all pushing down, and the "skin" keeps it from racking. I personally would add some ply to the bottom, just for space to put things.
